BUFFALO, NY (WKBW/BUSINESS FIRST) - Since Bass Pro has backed out of its plans to anchor downtown's waterfront Canal Side project, speculation and ideas about who should replace them have been rampant.
Jim Fink, in a recent Buffalo Business First column, explores possible replacement tenants that Benderson Development may be looking at to fill the Canal Side void.
A list of some prospective retailers for a Canal Side location:
Ikea - Officials have already expressed they have no interest in coming to downtown Buffalo.
Crate & Barrel - A furniture and furnishing retailer chain that is cautiously moving ahead with a limited number of new stores, currently none near the Buffalo market.
Nordstrom - The hugely popular department store chain is beginning to scout areas for new store locations. According to Fink, officials declined to comment on what cities are being considered, but retail industry sources said Buffalo is on the radar screen.
Nordstrom has several downstate locations, and their chief competitor, Macy's, has several outlets here.
Apple Store - Although Apple already has a busy store in the Walden Galleria, they may be a candidate for a spot along Canal Side.
Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Cafe - Chances are slim as one just opened in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
The Dinosaur BBQ - It's coming to Buffalo, it's just a matter of when, says Fink. In Canal Side? It would be a good fit, though not an anchor.
