Buffalo's Former First Lady Has Died

BUFFALO, NY ( courtesy reporter Steve Cichon) The Griffin Family sadly announces the passing of Margaret (McMahon) Griffin, the wife of the late Mayor James D. Griffin.

Mrs. Griffin died peacefully surrounded by her children and family on Saturday, July 16th after a lengthy illness. She was at home under the care of Hospice at the time of her passing.

She was 79.

Calling hours will be Monday, July 18, and Tuesday, July 19, at Reddington Funeral Home on Abbott Rd at Red Jacket Parkway in South Buffalo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Victory Basilica on Wednesday at 10:30am.

James Donald Griffin married Margaret McMahon on May 4, 1968. They had three children, Maureen, Megan and Tom. The Griffin's have lived on Dorrance Avenue, near the Lackawanna city line, for their entire married life.

They were members of the St. Martin's Holy Name, Altar and Rosary Society. Griffin was a member of The Father Baker Knights of Columbus 2243; First ward and South Buffalo Democratic Club; 82nd Airborne Association: life member; VFW life member; American Legion life member; Am Vets post #45; Bison City Rod and Gun Club and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Former Mayor James Griffin was a legendary political figure in Western New York and the City Of Buffalo. Griffin died on May 25, 2008 at the Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park. It was announced November 13, 2008 that Griffin had died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
