Buffalo, N.Y. (WKBW-TV) The Buffalo Teachers Federation is taking legal action against the school district.
The news comes as the federation says the last round of teacher layoffs approved by the board is in violation of the law.
Philip Rumore, president of the federation asks "why did they have to make these layoffs?"
He continued on to add "supposedly they had a balanced budget, no one was talking about 63 layoffs so what happened?"
The school board tells us they have yet to receive the letter sent by the BTF regarding the matter.
"The district took the position that if you have an English that is teaching English and you have an English teacher that's in the same tenure area, that's a coach, the district said that even though the coach has less seniority that coach gets to stay and the English teacher that's in the classroom has to go,that's a violation of law," said Rumore.
The BTF says they will wait for the district to respond before taking further legal action.
The board said the budget, as well as school consolidation and declining enrollment factored into the cuts made earlier this month.
