Theater critic Darwin McPherson from Buffalo Spree magazine checks in with Mike Randall on "Eyewitness News This Morning!' Find out about the new musical on stage at Niagara University.
Niagara University, N.Y. (June 15, 2011- release) – Broadway alumna Carmen Ruby Floyd, ’00, and eight of her NU theatre peers will electrify Niagara University’s Leary Theatre stage this summer with an exciting all-alumni production of the musical revue by John Kander and Fred Ebb, “The World Goes ‘Round” from July 21 through 31.
As NU Theatre continues to produce the canon of Kander and Ebb, audiences are invited to come relive some of the most exciting music in Broadway and Hollywood history—all performed, designed, and stage-managed by a company of NU Theatre alumni, and directed and choreographed by Derek Roland, ‘00. Some of the Broadway musicals and Hollywood films include “New York, New York,” “Chicago,” “Funny Lady,” “Cabaret,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” and many more.
Actors in the production include: Louis Colaiacovo, '99; Carmen Ruby Floyd, '00; Paschal Frisina III, '00; Vanessa Gawinski, '01; and Michele Marie Roberts, '99. Stage manager is Kurt Erb, ’09, while Ian Tweedie, ’05, is light and sound designer, and Sarah Cymba, ’11, is set designer.
Floyd has appeared on Broadway in such productions as “Avenue Q” and “The Lion King,” and she has appeared off-Broadway in “Crowns,” and “Little Ham,” among others. Colaiacovo, Erb, Frisina, Gawinski, and Roberts are all familiar names on the Buffalo stage, having performed in numerous productions at such venues as Artpark, MusicalFare Theatre, the Irish Classical Theatre Co., Road Less Traveled Productions, the Alleyway Theatre, the Kavinoky Theatre and more.
While the Beyreuth Festival in Germany has been producing the canon of Richard Wagner for many successful years, many may not realize that NU Theatre has been producing the canon of Kander and Ebb for many successful years in a very similar fashion – only different: Cabaret (1974/75 and 2007/08), Zorba (1986/87), Chicago (1994/95 and 2005/06), Steel Pier (1998/99), The Happy Time (2001/02), Flora, the Red Menace (2004/05), and The Rink (2008/09).
“The World Goes ‘Round” will be on stage in the Leary Theatre within the Elizabeth Ann Clune Center for Theatre, Clet Hall, at 7:00 pm on July 21 and 28. The production will be presented at 7:30 pm on July 22, 23, 29 and 30. Matinees will be held at 2:00 pm on July 24 and 31. A post-show discussion with the performers will be held on July 24.
