The Buffalo Sled Hockey team will travel to Blaine, Minnesota this weekend to represent Buffalo in the first ever Adult Hockey National Championship. The team was going to have to skip the tournament for financial reasons until Northtown Automotive Companies and Toyota stepped in to donate $5,000. Northtown Automotive Companies presented a check for $2,500 to the team this morning and announced a matching grant from Toyota.

“Northtown Automotive is proud to support our region’s sled hockey team,” said Northtown’s Craig Schreiber. “We’re dedicated to supporting Buffalo athletes and feel a real connection to this team as they have spent countless hours practicing at The Northtown Center at Amherst. We wish them the best of luck this weekend in the championship.”

The Buffalo Sled Hockey team is made up of talented young men who use a sled and two short ice picks to propel themselves on the ice. Sled hockey follows the same rules as traditional hockey. Several Buffalo Sled Hockey players are also members of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team, which won gold last year at the Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games.

“I am so proud of these young men. They train year round and are 100% dedicated to this team. We’re going into this national championship with Northtown and the Buffalo community 100% behind us and that means so much,” said head coach Rich DeGlopper. “A lot of companies talk about wanting to do more to help the community; Northtown is actually keeping that promise.”

The 2011 Adult Sled Hockey National Championship will take place as a part of the USA Hockey Disabled Hockey Festival April 1-3, 2011 in Blaine, Minnesota at the Schwan Super Rink.

Last summer, officials from the Town of Amherst and Northtown Automotive Companies announced the new name of the former Amherst Ice Center was to be The Northtown Center at Amherst. Northtown and the Town of Amherst agreed on a proposal for a 10-year deal in March of 2010.
