The school district issued this statement:
The layoffs were carefully considered as part of right-sizing the teaching staff to the student population, while working within the 2014-15 approved budget. Further, some of these layoffs are due to the move of School #115 to Harvey Austin #97, and the elimination of a 9th-grade class at Bennett High School for the 2014-15 school year.
This adjustment, as it appeared in the adopted 2014-15 budget, was based on an analysis of staff during the last school year that determined that many classes had low student enrollment. The reductions will provide consistent staffing across the district based on student population.
Those teachers who were part of the layoff are the district’s newest hires or simply lack seniority in their areas. The district is unable to take layoff action on staff overages sooner based on the number of retirement and disability notices that come in over the summer months, many as late as August. Based on future maternity leave, long term leaves, resignations and retirements, teachers who were laid off will likely be the first for consideration in filling those spots.
As always, it is the district’s intent to maintain quality of the classroom while working with the talent pool within our approved budget.
