Buffalo-Niagara private-sector jobs on rise

June 21, 2013 Updated Jun 21, 2013 at 8:04 AM EDT

Private-sector job growth in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area rose by a net 4,300 in the past year.

The state Department of Labor reported Thursday the 0.9 percent year-over-year increase was fueled by gains in the service, leisure and hospitality, and social and health-care sectors.

A decline was noted in government employment. The overall nonfarm (private sector plus government) rise amounted to 2,300 jobs, or 0.4 percent, in the Buffalo area.

Rochester added 1,200 private-sector jobs, up 0.3 percent, and 2,400 nonfarm jobs.

The monthly report showed just two Upstate metro areas - Binghamton and Elmira - with job losses compared to May 2012.
