SOUTH BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) -- UPDATE: The Buffalo Police have released the name of the individual found floating in Cazenovia Creek on Wednesday.
The victim has been identified as 47 year old M.Liebrecht of Buffalo. Buffalo Police say it appears foul play was not involved.
A gruesome discovery in the Cazenovia Creek. Buffalo Police and dive teams quickly responded to a call that a body was found in the creek around 11am Wednesday morning. "A white male floating in the Cazenovia Creek, approximately 48 years old, we retrieved his body from the creek and turned it over to the homicide squad," Lieutenant Mark Michalek, commander of the Buffalo Police Underwater Recovery Team, said.
The body was found in the water about 40 feet west of the bridge on Bailey at McKinley, on the north shore. It took the Buffalo Police Underwater Recovery Team about 20 minutes to pull the body out of the water. "Because of the strong winds and the current in the river, the divers had a tough time," Lieutenant Michalek said. "The recent weather we've had, the rain, the creeks and the river here are dark brown, no visibility. The current is pretty treacherous so the divers had a tough time maneuvering the body in the water."
Police say the man was in the water for about two days and there were no obvious injuries. He was recently reported missing. "We developed some information that he hasn't been seen since Monday," Lieutenant Michalek said.
Dive teams may have to make a couple more dives into the murky creek water in search of evidence. An autopsy is being performed by the Erie County Medical Examiner.
