TONAWANDA, NY (WKBW) -- Rescuers recovered the body of 51 year old Kevin Hughes of Lockport early Monday morning. He was found in his vehicle which plunged into the Erie Canal in the City of Tonawanda. "We received a call that... {a} resident was passing by and noticed some tire tracks going into the direction of the canal," Police Detective Tim Toth said.

The crash happened at the foot of Fillmore Avenue at East Niagara Street. Authorities say the vehicle went off the road, hit a lamp post, then went over the edge into the water. A dive team quickly responded. "The dive teams, they put their boats in... took a little bit of time for them to locate it, the vehicle was about 10 feet off of the dock," Detective Toth said.

Divers also found the lamp post that was hit, submerged under water. Police say this was a one car accident. "At this point it looks like an unfortunate accident... part of our investigation to figure out what took place this morning," Detective Toth said.
