Deputies Okal & Meredith of the Erie County Sheriff's Marine Unit responded to the East Niagara River to assist the U.S. Coast Guard with a reckless operation of a vessel complaint. The U.S. Coast Guard reported that while conducting a vessel inspection another vessel operated by the subject approached the Coast Guard vessel under full power, in turn almost striking the Coast Guard vessel. While interviewing the operator of the vessel in question, a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage was detected. The operator, 62 yr. old Terry W. Dean, was placed under arrest for Boating While Intoxicated and taken to the Erie County Sheriff's Grand Island substation.
Mr. Dean was administered a chemical breath test which determined his blood alcohol content to be .13%. Mr. Dean was then charged with Reckless Operation, Boating While Intoxicated - Common law and Boating While Intoxicated over .08%.
Mr. Dean was released to a third party on tickets. Vessel was towed.
