BUFFALO (WKBW) -- A search-and-rescue team from the Coast Guard Station Buffalo was called into action Wednesday night, coming to the aid of five people in the water at the Buffalo Boat Basin.
The boaters became stranded in the water when their sailboat capsized. The vessel managed to send out a distress call before sinking at 6:49 p.m.
The Coast Guard response team issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, or UMIB, to other boats in the area. The response team rescued four boaters from the water. A fifth was pulled to safety by a civilian boater who had heard the UMIB call on their radio.
The five boaters were evaluated on shore, and no serious injuries were reported. A spokesperson for the Coast Guard says all five were wearing life jackets.
Marine inspectors are working with the sailboat's owner on a plan to salvage the vessel. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
