Youngstown, NY (WKBW) - Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown is rich in history, but some believe its also rich with spirits from the dead. Unknown screams, footsteps, moving furniture, and orbs are just some of the unknown mysteries in the fort. According to historians, the site is more than 300 years old and was occupied by a number of countries since its location on the Niagara River and proximity to Lake Ontario was so vital. Centuries of war, conflict, and death has created countless tales and numerous ghost stories. Some believe soldiers never left the site.

"There was combat here, violent death, disease, starvation, and suffering," said Old Fort Niagara Executive Director Robert Emerson. "Those are the scenarios that seems to lend themselves to these stories."

Emerson has worked at Old Fort Niagara for more than a decade and says he's never experienced anything paranormal, but his staffers have had plenty of encounters.

"Some stories include orbs of light that follow you around through the hallways," added Emerson. "Another gentlemen saw the shadow of a man with no face. There has also been reports of footsteps and doors slamming when no one is in the building. These things are all unexplained mysteries."

The Fort will also be featured on the Discovery Channel's "Ghost Lab" Thursday night. Western New Yorkers can also experience the 'spooky' side of the fort during their haunted fortress event on Saturday. For more information visit:
