Bishop Kmiec To Resign

June 5, 2011 Updated Jun 5, 2011 at 11:10 AM EDT

BUFFALO, NY ( WKBW ) It is the end of an era for Buffalo's Bishop.

Bishop Edward Kmiec turned 75 years old, and according to regulations established by the Vatican, he must submit his resignation to the Pope.

Kmiec was honored during a special service held at Saint Joseph's Cathedral Saturday.

A new Bishop will be ordained after the Vatican approves Kmiec's resignation. However until that time, Kmiec says it will be business as usual.

"We're not letting down in any way, no lame duck or anything of that nature, until we have a big agenda to continue on, and we'll certainly do that until the Holy father with his disposition says, you're now finally retired,' Bishop Kmiec told Eyewitness News.

During the Saturday celebration, Bishop Kmiec ordained Steven Jekielek and Daniel Serbicki into the priesthood. Both recently graduated from Christ The King Seminary in East Aurora.
