Big Bar Tab: CDC Says Heavy Drinking Costs U.S. More Than $220 Billion Per Year

A study published by  the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week says that heavy drinking comes at a heavy cost to the U.S.

According to a story on the CDC website, the cost of excessive alcohol consumption in 2006 checked in at $223.5 billion, with nearly three-quarters of the cost due to binge drinking. The story says that researchers found the majority of the cost came from losses on workplace productivity.
