Lockport, NY (WKBW) -Mulvey Construction has been demolishing the Lockport Mall since April, but Wednesday afternoon demolition halted after countless baby seagulls and their nests were discovered. The nests were located in a hidden part of the building's roof top and were unknown to the demolition company. Animal rescue and rehabilitation groups say they were contacted by a concerned citizen and went to the site to help the distressed animals. The groups are now caring for about 50 baby gulls.

"Everything has a purpose. Gulls may get a bad name, but they're here for a reason," said Bob Humbert, a wildlife rehabilitator. "They clean up stuff people leave behind, like garbage and food."

The Town of Lockport Supervisor says Mulvey Construction discovered the nests and contacted the wildlife groups. Mulvey Construction halted it's work for the remainder of the day while the rescue continued. The wildlife groups believe countless babies were killed before the discovery, but the construction company and the Town of Lockport Building Inspector found no such evidence. Most of the gulls rescued are doing well. Demolition resumed Thursday.
