Buffalo, NY (WKBW) - Officers with the Buffalo Police Department were joined by common council members to kick off a unique way to recruit new cops. Friday morning Buffalo Police set up a full service mobile unit at 337 Hewitt Avenue to help potential applicants apply. The site is where 15-year-old Dominique Maye was shot and killed in September. Maye, a freshman at Riverside High School, was working on homework inside her residence when someone fired close to 20 shots at the home. Buffalo Police say tips from the public helped lead to an arrest Thursday. 24-year-old Kevin J. Davis II, an admitted gang member is now charged with murder.
"Someone might ask why this location," said Ellicott District Councilman Darius Pridgen. "We're concentrating on ensuring that our community is safe. This is just another example of community efforts and when the community and great employees come together we get great results."
There are five weeks left to register for the Buffalo Police Officer recruitment exam. The deadline to register is March 16th, followed by the Buffalo Police Exam on April 23rd. Council members Bonnie Russell, Demone Smith, and Darius Pridgen have contributed their own money to cover the first 20 application fees at the mobile unit locations.
