According to news release issued Tuesday by Polk, a report by the research firm shows that the average age of cars and light trucks in use in the U.S. has increased to 10.8 years -- a record high.

According to the Polk report, which analyzed national vehicle registration data, the slowdown of vehicle aging "correlates to the low sales volumes and the mix of car and truck sales in the U.S. in 2008 and 2009. "
