CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WKBW) - Members of the Patriot Guard Riders greeted the remains of Army Sgt. Shaina Schmigel at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Monday afternoon.

The 21-year-old was killed during a training exercise on Friday at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The riders escorted Schmigel to her hometown of Medina in Orleans County where hundreds of residents lined the streets of the village to honor her.

"She was a fellow soldier. From a different era, different time, but a fellow soldier nonetheless," Vietnam veteran Paul Beauchesne said.

"I appreciate everything she's done for our country," Medina resident Betty Moule added.

"Anybody that serves is a hero in my mind. Any veteran, anybody that volunteers. Anyone that volunteers to serve their country is a hero," Jim Freas of the Medina VFW said.

The cause of the accident in which Schmigel was killed is still under investigation, according to Army officials.
