DUNKIRK, NY (WKBW) - A horrific discovery by a Dunkirk woman has snowballed, after she saw the local animal control officer throwing away at least one dead dog in a dumpster.
The city council is now looking into what action they should take.
Witnesses say they saw Dunkirk's animal control officer dumping dead dogs into the dumpster owned by Family Dollars.
Nichole Barber, Dunkirk resident "I just didn't understand... Is this what the city's been doing the whole time?"
Questions are now swirling around Dunkirk, about how the city's animal control officer has been getting rid of dead animals.
Barber questions sanitary issues, saying "with all the diseases that are out there, how could he just do that?"
The exact number of dogs put in the dumpster remains unclear, but the fact that it happened at all still shakes people up.
Ernestine Harris, a dog lover, wonders "how can a person dump a dog or a cat like that?"
Dunkirk Mayor Anthony Dolce says believe it or not, health officials recommend putting a dog in a dumpster, but a public one, or in the back of a garbage truck.
Dunkirk got rid of it's dumpster a few months ago, and Dolce says he did not know there was an issue getting rid of the animals bodies.
This may not be the first time an animal's been thrown in a private dumpster, as "he was advised by the past animal control officer that this was how -- if he was in a bind, to use a private dumpster."
The animal control officer has written a letter to Family Dollar, apologizing and promising that it will never happen again.
Family Dollar has said they are satisfied with the letter of apology and will not press charges.
