AMHERST, NY (WKBW) -- Police in Amherst received a call around 6:00 a.m. Monday morning to report a man down in the street asking for help near the 300 block of Rosedale Boulevard.

Officers located 29-year-old Nicholas S. Sweeney of North Tonawanda, with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was taken to ECMC by ambulance where he died later in the afternoon.

His brother told Eyewitness News that Sweeney was visiting a friend at a home on Rosedale Boulevard.

Investigators searched a home at 352 Rosedale where it is believed an altercation took place that may have led to the shooting.

"I'm not sure exactly how the house fits in," said Amherst Police Capt. David Hoy. "There was scenes of a altercation in the driveway at the house."

The killing is the second homicide in the town this year.

"I've been here for 27 years," said neighbor Karl Schmitt. "Never had a problem around here."

Sweeney's brother said the North Tonawanda resident grew up on Buffalo's West Side and recently purchased three properties in North Tonawanda where he made a living as a land lord.

Officials ask anyone with information to call Amherst Police at 689-1333.
