AWOL Reservist Arrested on Issuing Bad Checks

TONAWANDA, NY (WKBW/Release) - The Town of Tonawanda Police Department has arrested a Sanborn man for passing bad checks while posing as serviceman deploying overseas.

Steven D. Burns, 21, was arrested by Detectives Monday for cashing $300 in personal checks on his closed checking account at Evans Bank in the Town of Tonawanda.

On each occasion, Burns wore his military uniform, stating he was deploying overseas in a few days and needed the cash immediately.

The clerks, sympathetic toward the serviceman’s plight, accommodated Burns and gave him cash before realizing the checks did not clear.

Burns is currently listed as AWOL from his reserve unit and subsequent investigation has found that he has perpetrated this fraud on at least 30 separate occasions throughout Erie and Niagara County.

Burns was arraigned in town court on petit larceny and issuing a bad check charges and remains in the Erie County Holding Center on $5,000 bail.

The U.S. Secret Service is also investigating.
