CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) 6 Chautauqua County beaches have been ordered closed due to unsatisfactory Blue-Green Algae levels.

All 6 closed beaches are on the shores of Chautauqua Lake. Earlier this summer the New York State DEC detected a large algae bloom in the lake, prompting warnings from the County Health Department.

The closed Chautauqua Lake Beaches are -
Bemus Point Beach
Heinz (Chautauqua Institution)
Children's (Chautauqua Institution)
College Pier (Chautauqua Institution)
University (Chautauqua Institution)
Lakewood Village Beach

The DEC has issued several tips for anyone who may come in contact with Blue-Green Algae and are experiencing symptoms;

-Seek immediate medical attention and contact the local health department.

-If people or pets are exposed to a bloom, rinse with clean water.
People and pets should stay out of any water that is discolored, has surface scums or shows other evidence of a bloom.

-Don't drink the water in or near the bloom- boiling water does not protect people or pets from blue-green algal toxins.

-Anglers should not eat fish caught from areas that look like spilled paint or pea soup.
