There will be no varsity football at Pine Valley Central School in 2014-15. The district says it was forced to make the decision based on low turnout.
"There was a pre-sign up back in the Spring and there were 29 students signed up that they were interested in football and unfortunately only 15 showed up," said David Kurzawa, the Interim Superintendent of Pine Valley Central Schools.
The majority of the 15 players are juniors and seniors and if they suffered injuries the coach would have to replace them with freshmen whose size wouldn't match up against other opponents, creating a safety concern.
Administrators say they are now reaching out to other districts close by to try and join their teams.
