Fort Niagara Endures; Business As Usual Despite Late Night Fire

May 26, 2013 Updated May 26, 2013 at 10:20 AM EDT

Old Fort Niagara Association's Aaron Dey reports that Youngstown, Porter and Lewiston volunteers saved the day (and night) at Old Fort Niagara.

As 8AM morning tour buses load into the parking lot at Old Fort Niagara for another awesome day of fun, little evidence is noticed of fire damage to the roof of the Gate of Nations which is the main entrance off the bridge giving you entrance to the Fort.

After closer daytime examination it appears that a fire ember from the south redoubt's chimney, which is right next to the Gate of Nations flew and landed on the roof creating a fire which burned the top half of the cross timber as well as insulation under the roof.

The damage appears to be minor, but the entrance will remained close until mason and structural engineers can inspect it by Tuesday.
