2 Apartments Destroyed, 6 Damaged in Fire

HAMBURG, NY (WKBW) - Construction crews spent the early evening on Monday patching holes in the roof of an eight-unit apartment building in Hamburg after fire gutted most of the structure.

"We were able to go in, got a few things," said Sandra Diakakis. She and her roommate, Mingka Layman, lost everything to smoke damage.

"When I came around the corner," said Diakakis, "and saw that half the building was gone I think I was just totally stunned and in shocked."

"The fire started on the outside of the garage - I don't know if it started in the mulch - they're still investigating that," said the property owner, David Burke.

Emerald Green Apartments on Rogers Rd. are two-level townhouse style apartments with garages.

A pickup truck in one burned out garage looked as if it had been in a war zone.

Eight families have been displaced. Burke his helping his tenants with temporary housing.

"We made arrangements with the Comfort Suites down the road - anybody that needs room we're going to give them a room and buy them a meal," he said.

The cause is still under investigation. No one was injured. A pet dog was killed.
