Niagara County lawmakers acted quickly to fill the vacant legislative seat formerly held by Niagara Town Councilman Danny W. Sklarski Tuesday, appointing Brittany Catchpole, D-Niagara, by a near-unanimous vote.

In the process, they also made history.

At 18, Catchpole is now the youngest citizen to ever serve as a county legislator in Niagara County, ending a record held for nearly four decades by Lee Simonson, who, after being elected at the age of 20, went on to serve for 32 years as a county lawmaker.

Catchpole is a senior at Niagara-Wheatfield High School who will be headed to Niagara University in the fall, as well as a former member of the Legislative Intern Program.
