A 17-year-old boy is injured while turkey hunting Monday morning.

According to New York State Police, the boy was shot in the back with a birdshot pellet from a shotgun as turkey season opened Monday morning.

The incident happened on Pickup Hill Road in the Town of Cherry Creek when two parties were turkey hunting in close proximity to one another on private property, according to troopers. Officials say one party allegedly fired at a turkey and part of the discharged round hit the victim in his torso.

The boy was taken to a local hospital, was treated and released. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

State Police say they have identified the shooter and the investigation is ongoing.
