ORCHARD PARK, NY (WKBW) -- A young man is in critical condition at ECMC after a sledding accident at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park around 1:30pm Monday afternoon.
Officials say 23 year old Daniel Laemmerhirt was going down a hill head first when he hit a bump, lost control of his sled, and struck his chin on the hard ground. "He was conscious at the time. He managed to walk up the hill on his own. He was here with a couple friends," Sergeant Joseph Belden, with the Erie County Sheriff's Office said. Friends at the scene say Laemmerhirt, who had a bloody lip, started complaining of dizziness when he got to the top of the hill, and eventually passed out. An off-duty EMT assisted until help arrived.
Mercy Flight responded, and Laemmerhirt was rushed to the Erie County Medical Center. As of Wednesday evening, he was still in the ICU in critical condition. "A lot of people go down with their head first...it's a fun way of doing it, but you gotta remember ice. It can be dangerous," Erie County Parks Commissioner Jim Hornung said.
Commissioner Hornung says there is a way to get updated on current weather conditions at sled parks by calling 716-858-8513 or logging on to http://www.erie.gov/parks/.
