Russo - Bills Head to Break with Bye Week Blues

Orchard Park (WKBW) Playoff teams win that game. Good teams win that game. But there it is. The Bills head off to the bye week at 3-and-4 following another frustrating loss. 35-34 the final against Tennessee. It's never easy Bills fans is it?

Head Coach Chan Gailey said after the game on Sunday that he is going to reevaluate everything during his normal bye week routine. I'll bet Chris Johnson's 10.8 yard average that Gailey will start with the defense.

It's amazing to think that the same unit that had fans thinking playoffs back during the summer, is the same group that you fairly put a big share of the blame for the Bills being 3-and-4.

Chris Kelsay is always good for a quote. "It's embarrassing".
He's right and it has been for most of the year. All that keeps going through my head is one of those a bad late night commercials with the Bills acting as the company offering help.

"Have a struggling or bad offense? Come get healthy against the Buffalo Bills."

The Titans offense entered Sunday ranked 26th in the NFL averaging 314 yards a game. Tennessee had 260 yards at the half against the Bills and finished with 390 here in Orchard Park. Chad Johnson had rushed for a combined 301 yards in his first six games. Sunday he gashed the Bills for 195 yards and averaged... averaged... 10.8 yards a carry. Johnson also added a pair of touchdowns, his first two of the season.

"We had guys out of gaps and he is the type of guy who if you give him a crease he is going to hit it. He has the speed, the agility and the capability to take it the distance, as he showed", said Chris Kelsay.

Many have showed the ability to make the Bills look silly over the last four weeks. The Patriots rushed for 247 yards. The 49ers rushed for 311. Even in a victory over the Cardinals the Bills surrendered 182 on the ground.

Several Bills players were asked following the game if the team still has confidence in the scheme put together by Dave Wannstedt.
Gailey said at this point he's not considering any coaching changes on his staff.

"I believe that if that in the end of the day whenever you are told to do something you go out and do it", said Mario Williams. "Especially when you know that at the end of the day's it's not necessarily what's going on in the scheme. IT's gap sounds, it's fitting the gaps and that's across the board. That's every player getting in trouble with that. Things could be different just like anywhere. We have to fit whatever we are being told to do", continued WIlliams.

It would help if some of the defensive leaders helped the cause. Williams had 2 tackles on Sunday in the loss. "I just have to look at myself and get better.", said Williams. This bye week is going to be a long one, especially with the way this game ended up. Like I said, I just have to find ways to make an impact in the scheme and things like that.", finished Williams.

The Bills defense did a better job in the second half against the Titans, and could have made the poor showing go away with a stop on the final drive. Bills safety George Wilson had a chance to end things on 2nd down and 11 from the Buffalo 11 with 1:57 to play but couldn't come up with the interception on Matt Hasselbeck.

"I personally feel like it was on me." ,said Wilson after the game. I had an opportunity to get an interception and I did not come up with the ball which would have sealed the victory", continued Wilson. Hasselbeck hit Nate Washington for the go ahead touchdown two plays later on 4th and 9.

The winning drive for the Titans was set up by Ryan Fitzpatricks only big mistake of the day. And it was costly. Fitzpatrick was clearly upset in the postgame locker room after throwing his only interception of the game with 3:03 to play. Fitzpatrick was looking for Donald Jones on 3rd and 7 when he was picked off by Jason McCourty on the Buffalo 39.

"I just got greedy in a situation that I did not have any business being greedy in. It was a dumb throw, dumb decision by me." , said Fitzpatrick. Third down at the end of the game, game on the line, Chan put the ball in my hands essentially and I threw an interception. So that one hurts."

You would think that 34 points would be enough, but the offense failed to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick finished 27-of-35 for 225 yards and three touchdowns on the day. He had one of his best games of the season going up until the interception, but in a year where his inconsistency has been an issue it's a throw that he simply can't make.

Chan Gailey was asked where his confidence stands with Fitzpatrick heading into the bye. "It is the same. He made a bad throw at the end. Other then that, he played really, really well. He made one bad throw. If you get rid of quarterbacks for one bad throw, you are not going to have any quarterbacks left", finished Gailey.

So the Bills head off to break with the bye week blues.
Instead of 4-3, the Bills are 3-4 with 9 games to go. Next up trips to Houston, and New England. This may only get worse before it gets better. At least fans will get one weekend this fall where they are not pulling their hair out.
