I've been around for a while. Every time I think I have seen it all, something happens to shatter that belief. I was sitting at Wegmans tonight, as I usually do a few nights a week for my "executive" dinner, when I spotted one of the "regulars". I am still convinced that there are some people who actually "live" at Wegmans. This guy has been there every single night for years, and tonight he put on quite a show. I have to give him credit because he is such a "smooth" operator. He has his scam perfected. I am sure it has taken him years to get it down just right. He goes and gets a tiny little morsel of some food, then goes and pays for it, then goes and sits down at one of the tables and eats. But then, the show starts. After a few minutes he gets up and goes and gets one of those small "sample" containers. He then proceeds to "slither" over to the Soup Bar, always right next to his table. He fills the container with the latest offering, then "slithers" back to his seat and gobbles it down. I swear, within 60 seconds he gets up, takes his container back and then fills it up with the next offering. Looked like clam chowder tonight I think. Once again, he's up and repeats the offense. He's slick! Never the same dish twice! he rotates around the display, beginning with maybe, chowder then chili then cream of tomato then broccoli-cheese. Oh, did i mention he does this delicate dance without ever making a trip to the cashier!? I watched him make 5 trips! He then carefully cleans up his table, grabs his cart, which never has anything in it, and disappears into the produce section. I'm tempted to try it myself but the vision of me being dragged out of there in handcuffs and the resulting story in the paper the next morning, has made me think otherwise.
