Sometimes I think I have a book in me somewhere..not literally although I'm sure I could use the fiber. I realize now that I've interviewed some pretty cool people thru the years, so I thought I'd share some memories, that sometimes come to mind during a long red light. My very first "celebrity" interview was--believe it or not, Gregory Peck. Talk about trial by fire. It was before I worked at Channel 7. I was in Rochester at their independent station doing a midday movie show similar to what I did at Channel 29 eons ago. Anyway, Rochester has a close affiliation to the George Eastman House due to their Kodak industry. The George Eastman House stores and screens classic movies for posterity. One week they were honoring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. So, our station played a week's worth of Gregory Peck movies in honor of his appearance. We secured a 2 HOUR interview with him that would be edited to run between the movie segments throughout the week. Well, softspoken and bigger than life, Mr. Gregory Peck was everthing you'd imagine in a Hollywood legend. Still tall, dark and handsome with a voice of pure velvet, Mr. Peck answered all my -probably sophmoric- questions thoughtfully and gracefully for the entire time. He gazed into my eyes like I was the most important person in the world. Me wondering if my anti-perspirant was holding up to the job. All the station management crammed into the studio to watch. It was really something that now, 30 years later I still actually remember. To say the least, the experience was once in a lifetime. And here's the best part. When it as all over, Mr. Peck came over to me, bowed slightly to speak to me intimately and said, "Thank you for making that so easy for me". What a gentleman. Do you think he really knew how easy he -in fact- made the experience for me? I like to think he did. He was just that kind of guy. Classy. Maybe I should write that book!..xxme
