The warmer weather is here and that means some good summer reading for me. I enjoy delving into books all year long, but I read much more when the temperatures break. During the winter months, I can always find chores to do inside the house, but when summer comes, I think there's nothing better than reading a good book while soaking up the sun on a chaise lounge. I am pretty particular about what I read. 99% of the time, it's a biography. It's not that I don't like reading fiction, but I am more interested if I know it's a true story. I especially like reading about people in the media. I love learning about their lives both on and off the job and can even learn a thing or two through their experiences.
Some of my favorite autobiographies are Walter Cronkite's "A Reporter's Life", Leslie Stahl's "Reporting Live", and Katharine Graham's "Personal History". One of the funniest stories from Ms. Graham's book came when her and her dear friend, Warren Buffet (the billionaire investor and owner of The Buffalo News) were forced to compile the Sunday edition of the Washington Post because workers were on strike. Buffet remarked how difficult it was because of all the inserts in the paper, and even suggested raising the price of the Sunday edition as a result. Always the businessman!
I also recommend reading Barbara Walter's "Ambition". This is a fabulous book! I was enthralled with her life and truly enjoyed every page! What am I reading now? Well, I feel guilty even admitting it, but I just couldn't resist. It's Kitty Kelley's unauthorized biography of "Oprah". I don't really have an interest in watching Oprah's talk show anymore, but I am a big fan of her magazine. I read it religiously. I am very intrigued by her, and since she put off plans to write her own story, I figured the closest I could get would be the Kitty Kelley version. So far, I am enjoying it. Let me know if you have any other suggestions!
