This cold spring has delayed the opening of the ice boom. The International Joint Commission's International Niagara Board of Control has determined that opening of the ice boom is likely to be delayed beyond April 1.
Aerial observations show that the eastern basin of Lake Erie is still 27 percent ice covered. That is an area of about 530 square miles.
The governing operation of the ice boom requires that all floating sections of the boom be opened by April 1st unless there is more than 250 square miles of ice on eastern Lake Erie.
Last year the boom opening began on March 22, the earliest opening was on March 5, 1998 and the latest was May 3, 1971. The normal "ice out" date is April 17.
