(WKBW) If you have to turn up the volume on the TV, you'll want to listen to this month's Women In Leadership honoree. Channel 7 teams up with the Buffalo - Niagara Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners on these monthly reports. Dr. Anne Orsene is helping people hear more clearly, and that's why she's been chosen to be part of our Women In Leadership series.
Dr. Anne Orsene is an audiologist with Hearing Evaluation Services of Buffalo, the only non-profit audiology practice in the country, and she takes pride in helping people restore one of the vital five senses.
Raised in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of women's rights, Anne grew up surrounded by strong women. She was drawn to audiology, intrigued by the new technology and helping people overcome the stigma of wearing a hearing device.
Dr. Orsene says, "It's really tiring when you're straining to hear, and people will stop attending social functions and withdraw from family activities."
And even when they're eventually fitted with a hearing aid, a study found that two-thirds have devices that are not programmed properly. Dr. Orsene says patients at her facility are getting the most thorough exam available.
That kind of testing isn't required by hearing aid dispensers in New York, but it will soon be, if Dr. Orsene has her way. She has been named to a state committee on dispensing hearing aids, and she wants to make sure all patients have devices that fit their needs.
