(WKBW/Cleveland Clinic) About one million Americans will suffer a heart attack this year, but many of them can be avoided if you take the right precautions.

Doctors say the key to beating a heart attack is first to examine your lifestyle: Are you exercising? Do you have a good diet? Is your weight in good control? Are you smoking?

Doctors also say you have to consider your treatable risk factors, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. They say a lack of sleep can also contribute to heart disease.

They say it's important to keep your stress under control, but one of the best things you can do to decrease your heart attack risk is to get up and move.

Doctors say eating a diet low in salt, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol,
and refined sugars will also decrease your risk of having a heart attack.
