(WKBW) Kenmore Mercy Hospital breaks ground on a new, state of the art emergency department.

The ceremonial shovel went into the dirt today, marking the beginning of construction on the new 14 million dollar ER that will nearly double the size of its existing ER and provide state-of-the-art emergency services.

Designed to care for up to 40,000 patients a year, the new 24,000 square-foot facility, located on the south side of the hospital, will include 25 private treatment rooms equipped with the latest lifesaving technology.

The new emergency department is expected to be up and running by the summer of 2013.
