Story Updated: Jul 19, 2012

(WKBW) Schools and sports leagues all over Western New York are stepping up their efforts to protect young athletes from damaging concussions.

And now, to comply with a new state law, baseline testing is being offered for free.

Excelsior Foundation of Western New York and Laux Sporting Goods are teaming up on this baseline testing for all youth athletes ages 10 to 18 this summer before the start of the fall sports season.

A "baseline" test is an on-line test of each child's brain function, such as speed, memory and visual motor skills.

These results are compared to tests done after a possible concussion to determine the health of the athlete and when he or she can safely return to play.

Since it was launched last year, the Sports Concussion Center at Excelsior has worked with several school districts and sports leagues for baseline testing and consulting.
