Story Updated: May 2, 2012

(ABC News) This story is coming from ABC's Medical Minute. New research finds pacifiers can actually promote good health.

Researchers found pacifiers can increase the rate of breastfeeding.

Scientists studied more than 2,200 infants during their birth hospitalization.

Their rate of exclusive breastfeeding decreased from 79 percent to 68 percent after newborns' use of pacifiers was restricted.

The authors aren't sure why, but say it seems that baby's earliest
comfort may be a healthy attachment after all!
