(WKBW/New York Daily News) A heads up for your next trip to the grocery store. A new study finds shopping carts are full of bacteria.
Researchers from the University of Arizona say 72% of the carts they tested came back positive for fecal bacteria and half carried potentially deadly E. coli bacteria. They say it's worse than you would find in a public bathroom.
The toxic mess comes mostly from people placing packages of raw meat and chicken in their carts, but it also comes from babies with soiled diapers being put into the cart's basket.
What should you do? Well, researchers say babies are most susceptible to picking up a bug from a dirty shopping cart, so keep them away.
Adults should be OK using hand sanitizer or by thoroughly washing their hands.
