(WKBW/ABC News) Soda is not the healthiest beverage on the market--too much sugar, too many calories, so a lot of people drink diet soda instead, but that may not be a better alternative.

A new study presented at an American Stroke Association Conference found a 48% increase in heart attack, stroke and heart-related deaths among diet soda drinkers compared to those who didn't drink any diet soda. There was no increase among those who drank regular soda.

However, researchers say the study did not determine 'why' the risk of heart attack and stroke was greater or whether the diet soda was the actual cause.
