Physicians, nurses and staff of Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo will get a first look Wednesday morning for the new John R. Oishei Children's Hospital.
Architects and construction officials working on the design for the new hospital will present a set of the most current plans at 10 a.m., marking the next phase in the design development phase of planning.
Plans for the 12-floor hospital, part of Kaleida Health, include a specialized pediatric care, labor and delivery and post-partum care. The $220 million facility will also include a specialized pediatric oncology unit on the entire 12th floor in partnership with Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
The facility, due to open in late 2015, will replace the existing facility on Bryant Street a mile away.
The "pin up" session will include representatives from Boston-based architecture firm Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott as well as Turner Construction, who will answer questions and provide feedback on the design to date. The design team has met with 27 user groups representing all areas of the hospital, including staff and patient families.
According to Kaleida, creating a recognizable brand and identity while allowing for clinical expertise in a setting that promotes patient and family-centered care are among the project goals. The design also must leverage campus-wide services and infrastructure at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus site.
