AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) Police say icy roads were a major factor in a morning accident that forced the closure of North French Road in Amherst between Sweet Home Road and Campbell Boulevard.

It happened around 8am when a female driver heading eastbound on North French Road was unable to stop because of slippery conditions.

The passenger car then knocked down a power pole and crashed into a home which caused a natural gas leak after the home's outside meter was damaged.

Utility crews were able to stop the gas leak which forced a 8 1/2 month pregnant woman to flee the home in bare feet with her two dogs after she feared the gas might explode.

The accident also caused power lines to fall on two occupied vehicles with one woman trapped inside her car.

North French was closed for over an hour as crews freed the trapped woman and removed the power lines from the roadway.

Police say only the driver of the out-of-control car suffered minor injuries.
