Kendall, NY (WKBW) - An apparent domestic dispute in Orleans County leads to a shooting and a fire.
Police say a man shot his wife, set fire to his home and then turned the gun on himself.
In the small town of Kendall, NY, no one would have ever expected this -- not just a massive blaze that destroyed a home, but a shooting as well.
"It's extremely rare, we're never had something like this here" says Kendall Fire Chief Mike Schultz.
Authorities say Dennis Buehler confronted his wife Linda at their home on Peter Smith Road Monday evening, shooting her in the shoulder.
Linda managed to get away, escaping to a nearby home.
Firefighters say Buehler, armed, then threatened to set the house on fire. The scene struck fear -- just three months after four firefighters were shot, two of which were killed, when responding to a fire in Webster, a town just 40 miles away.
Schultz says with a gunman inside, deputies "wanted to get him in custody and had the whole scene secure before they allowed us in. They didn't want to have that threat."
However, Schultz says this incident was different from the start. He says deputies knew the identity of the gunman, and the scene was contained right away.
Authorities say Buehler carried out his threat. He allegedly set his house on fire, walked outside and then shot himself in the face.
Dennis and Linda Buehler were both taken to STRONG hospital. At last check they were both in guarded condition. Both are expected to survive.
No firefighters were injured.
Investigators say Dennis Buehler has not been charged yet. However he could face assault, attempted murder and arson charges.
