Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I'm a candidate for Laser Vision Correction?
We suggest you schedule a free screening with our Refractive Counselor. Bring your glasses or prescription and we'll determine which refractive procedure will offer you the greatest benefit.
What is the difference between PRK and LASIK Laser Vision Correction?
PRK and LASIK Laser Vision Correction are both procedures that can correct refractive error by reshaping the cornea utilizing a cool laser. This reshaping allows light rays to properly focus on the retina. PRK, or Photo Refractive Keratectomy, is usually used for lower degrees of correction. It is performed on the surface of the eye. LASIK or Laser Assisted in-Situ Keratomileusis involves creating a "flap" in the cornea, using the Excimer Laser to reshape the cornea and replacing the flap in its original position.
How successful is Refractive Surgery?
Depending upon your prescription, your doctor can determine the likelihood of reaching 20/40 or better vision. 20/40 is the requirement for driving a car without the use of corrective lenses. Approximately 92% of patients reach 20/30 or better vision with one procedure. If you do not reach 20/40 with one procedure, then an enhancement procedure may be done to improve your vision.
How will I know which procedure is right for me?
When you come in for your screening, you will meet with one of our refractive coordinators and discuss the available procedures and evaluate which procedure would be right for you. You and the doctor, however, determine the final decision.
How long will I have to be off work?
We generally tell people that you will only need about 2-3 days of recovery time. This is a very personalized question. Everyone heals at their own rate, but on the average time off of work is very minimal.
Is it a painful to have LASIK or PRK surgery?
During the procedure you should feel little discomfort. Anesthetic eye drops are administered before and during the procedure. Afterwards there may be some discomfort, which may vary from mild to moderate sensations. Any discomfort that may be felt will only last a few days. Eye drops and oral pain medications are sufficient to alleviate any discomfort.
Does insurance cover Refractive surgery?
Refractive surgery is considered an elective procedure. Most insurance companies do not cover this. You need to contact your insurance company to verify coverage.
How much does the procedure cost?
We have just reduced the cost of both procedures to make this incredible alternative more affordable. * The cost of the procedure for simple Myopia, higher degrees of Myopia and Astigmatism is $999- $1499 per eye. This cost is based on treatment of both eyes. This includes all pre and postoperative exams, the laser procedure itself, the post procedure medical kit, and any enhancements that may be necessary for six months following the procedure. See our Financing/Insurance information page.
How do I find out more about Refractive surgery?
Call our Refractive Coordinator at (716) 892-2020 to schedule for a no charge, no obligation screening to find out if Refractive Surgery is right for you.

The procedure described above, like all surgical procedures, involves certain risks. Your surgeon or staff member can discuss the possible risks and benefits with you in more detail.
