Chronic Pain Linked To Falls In Seniors

Story Updated: Nov 24, 2009

Falling is dangerous and sometimes even deadly for older Americans, and now a new study shows that certain seniors are at high risk of taking a tumble.
Doctors in Boston found that chronic pain was associated with an increased
likelihood of falling in older adults.
They looked at hundreds of seniors living on their own, asking
them to record pain levels and when they fell.
Researchers say those who had chronic pain in their bones and joints had a 50 percent higher risk of falling over a period of 18 months compared to their peers who had no pain.
