The Great American Smokeout

Story Updated: Nov 19, 2009

Want to create more birthdays? The American Cancer Society says all it takes is a plan to kick the habit, and today is a good day to start it.
It's the 34th Great American Smokeout. The American Cancer Society says taking that first step to a healthier life is one that can lead to lowering your cancer risk and living longer.
We have more ex-smokers in the country today than we have smokers, and smoking rates in New York are at their lowest level, but experts say they are still too high. They say around 17 percent of adults in New York are still smoking.
If you need help breaking free from cigarettes, contact the New York State Smokers Quitline at 1-866-NY-QUITS. Those who are eligible will get a free supply of nicotine patches to get them started and lots of support.
