Confusion About Over-the-Counter Cold Medications

Story Updated: May 26, 2009
When your kids get sick, you want to do everything you can to help them feel better, but a new study shows a lot of parents are still doing the wrong things when it comes to over the counter medicines.
The new report shows that many parents are confused about how to read drug labels and still think it's appropriate for young children to take these medicines.
About a year ago, the Food and Drug Administration came out with an advisory
saying it was too risky for children under the age of two to be given over-the-counter cough and cold medicines.
The medicines currently on the market are designed for children ages 4 and older.
Researchers say overdosing children on these medicines can be
dangerous leading to convulsions, rapid heart rate and decreased levels of
consciousness.

Thank you for your article about cough and cold medicines in children, as a dad and a doctor, I find children’s cough and cold medications a very scary topic. There is a new product found in Wegmans that has been shown to be safe and effective for children 1 and older. It is called Honey Don’t Cough, you should check it out and let parents know about it.
