Medical Tests Have High Doses Of Radiation

Story Updated: Mar 3, 2009

A new report finds Americans are being exposed to higher doses of
radiation than ever before, thanks in large part to the huge increase in
medical tests such as CAT scans.
We all know radiation can sometimes be life-saving, but researchers are concerned that many tests are unnecessary and that the doctors who prescribe them may be too quick to rely on them.
Experts say one 64-slice CT scan of the heart is equivalent to
about 600 chest X-rays.
Patients can help protect themselves by asking whether radiological testing
is truly necessary, and if there might be another option that could provide
the same information with less radiation.
