Grand Island, N.Y. (WKBW) - Jessica Flash, 11, and Allyson Nemeth, 11, have one big thing in common.

“We like to bake,” Nemeth said.

They also both had loved ones touched by cancer and wanted to make a difference.

“We decided to start a club to help kids with cancer,” Nemeth said.

The club called “Cooking For Cancer” started last year when the girls got together with their friends and classmates at St. Stevens School on Grand Island to bake cookies. All the money goes to Carly's Club at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

“We want to help kids our age with cancer to live a normal life so they are not stuck thinking about will i be here always,” Flash said.

Emily Marciniak is with Carly's Club and said she was impressed with the girls’ efforts.

“At the end of the school year they had raised $1,000 which was their goal. It can either go to social support programs for the kids and their families. For example, we may go to Darien Lake for the day. The other side of things we help to fund pediatric cancer research,” Marciniak said.

Flash said it is all about the kids.

“We like it because they get to go somewhere and feel like a normal kid even if it's just for a day,” Flash said.

The girls said this project is a step above the rest. They have a plan.

“It's not just a bake sale, it’s more. The classmates would volunteer for a month and we would basically bake in their kitchen and then sell in their neighborhoods. We didn't want to sell to the same neighbors every day,” Nemeth said.

Now, their group is growing and they are not only baking for a good cause. They are holding a Pasta Sauce-Off for the community with a silent auction and more.

“Jess and I both feel we want to make a difference in the world cause that's our way in life that we want to pursue in life,” Nemeth said.

The Sauce-Off takes place Saturday, February 22 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the LaSalle Yacht Club in Niagara Falls. Please contact Kim Nemeth at 716-481-3746 for more information.
