Today we're in the cornfields of Florida, where it's prime sweet corn growing season! In fact, the Florida cornfields supply the variety known as Supersweet corn to the whole country from October through June.
After years of research and development, the growers here came up with a variety that's the sweetest ever -- and it stays that way longer than traditional varieties.even up to a week in our fridge after we bring it home. And after these babies are hand-picked, they're rushed quick-as-a-wink from these fields over to the packing house where they're packed up for us and then they're run through a cold water bath before being packed. Ice is blown over the crates to keep the corn cool, slowing the sugar-to-starch conversion. And keeping the corn cool is what keeps it homegrown-tasting and so super-sweet for so long.
Well, we used to only be able to buy yellow ears. But today we'll also find white and bi-colored ears -- in the husk and out of the husk, wrapped in tray packs for every size family. In fact, some already come in microwaveable packaging, making it easier than ever to enjoy fresh corn on the cob - and it's ready to go any time! Tomorrow I'll be sharing tips for enjoying super-sweet corn that you won't want to miss, so come back for more super-sweet...
